Parents and Mac OS X 10.8
Stay away from Apple’s latest OS update.
The upgrade to 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 break parental controls and cut off access to many services, including Gmail, Google Calendar and Apple’s own iCloud services.
If you have already upgraded to 10.8, stay away from the updates to 10.8.1 and 10.8.2.
The first update to 10.8.1 was only a mild problem. 10.8.2 breaks things completely.
Apparently any service requiring a secure connection, known as SSL or HTTPS, will fail. Since that’s almost everything for many schools and most email systems, the computer becomes little more than a cute paperweight.
Apple is aware of the problem and hopes to have it fixed for the 10.8.3 update, but there are no guarantees.
There are a few workarounds, but they involve removing parental controls.
