It’s a scam

If someone calls and says your computer is infected and they need to take control of it, hang up.

It’s a scam.

In the past three months, several of my clients have called to tell me someone has called them, saying their computer is infected and Microsoft has asked the caller to connect remotely and take care of it. They direct the user to a website that loads up a remote control session in which the caller takes control of the computer to clean it.

I’m shocked, just shocked, to hear that they can’t completely clean it under the Microsoft contract and need a credit card number to be able to finish the job. Barring that, they offer to load monitoring software on the computer.

If you fall for this, call somebody to clean your computer. You should probably file a police report, too, though I don’t know what sort of cybercrime this might fall under.

Remember, if it doesn’t pass the smell test, don’t do it.

Cordially,

Steven
